Is a hot dog a sandwich?

The question is only interesting because nobody is really arguing about hot dogs. They are arguing about what a category is for. If a sandwich is defined by its structure — filling, bread either side — the answer follows mechanically. If it is defined by how the thing is made, sold and eaten, it follows just as mechanically in the other direction. Both sides are reasoning correctly from different premises, which is why the argument never resolves and why it keeps being had.

The reference figures come from a YouGov survey of US adults, fielded over four days in October 2025. Respondents who said they were not sure are not carried into the distribution here, so the published shape is the split among people who committed to an answer rather than among everyone asked. It is also a US sample, which is worth knowing before reading it as a fact about people in general.
